Satellite measurement based estimates of decadal changes in European nitrogen oxides emissions

چکیده
Long-term satellite measurements of nitrogen dioxide in the troposphere are used in combination with a continental scale air quality model in order to verify and improve available estimates of multi-annual changes of emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in Europe and the Mediterranean area between 1996 and 2005. As a result, a measurement-based data set of NOx emissions on a 1 by 1 grid and averaged over summer months is elaborated. The results are compared with emission data based on the EMEP emission inventory. Our data are in agreement with the EMEP estimates suggesting a general decline in the level of NOx emissions in Western and Central European countries (France, Germany, Great Britain and Poland). Over Southern Europe and for shipping emissions, neutral to positive trends are found both for the inverted and bottom-up emissions. In contrast, considerable differences between both data sets are found in some other countries. In particular, significant negative trends instead of the positive ones in the “bottomup” inventory are found for the Balkan countries, Russia and Turkey. The NOx emission trends derived from satellite measurements demonstrate larger spatial heterogeneity than those calculated with the EMEP data, especially in Russia and Ukraine. The obtained estimates of the decadal trends in NOx emissions for Great Britain are found to be consistent with independent data from the U.K. Automatic Urban and Rural Network (AURN). It is also found that using our emission estimates yields better agreement of model calculations with near-surface ozone measurements of the European EMEP network. Correspondence to: I. B. Anthropogenic emissions of NOx over China: Reconciling the difference of inverse modeling results using GOME2 and OMI measurements
Inverse modeling using satellite observations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) columns has been extensively used to estimate nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions in China. Recently, the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2 (GOME-2) and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) provide independent global NO2 column measurements on a nearly daily basis at around 9:30 and 13:30 local time across the equator, respecti...
متن کاملTechnical Note: A diagnostic for ozone contributions of various NOx emissions in multi-decadal chemistry-climate model simulations
Nitrogen oxide (NOx=NO+NO2) emissions from various sources contribute to the ozone budget. The identification of these contributions is important, e.g. for the assessment of emissions from traffic. The non-linear character of ozone chemistry complicates the online diagnosis during multi-decadal chemistry-climate simulations. A methodology is suggested, which is efficient enough to be incorporat...
متن کاملIntercontinental transport of nitrogen oxide pollution plumes
We describe the first satellite observation of intercontinental transport of nitrogen oxides emitted by power plants, verified by simulations with a particle tracer model. The analysis of such episodes shows that anthropogenic NOx plumes may influence the atmospheric chemistry thousands of kilometers away from its origin, as well as the ocean they traverse due to nitrogen fertilization. This ki...
متن کاملA Reactivity Based Emission Inventory for the South Pars and Its Implication for Ozone Pollution Control
The South Pars zone in Iran encompasses the largest gas refineries and petrochemical complexes in the world. In the South Pars zone, elevated concentrations of reactive hydrocarbons co-emitted with nitrogen oxides from industrial facilities lead to substantial ozone production downwind. To understand the role of these emissions on the ozone formation and, to formulate appropriate control st...
